Corn Stalk

Anhydrous by Noah Siela

Anhydrous

There’s an acre where corn won’t grow
From an anhydrous leak 20 years ago
When Jerry’s not planting seed
Sells it off the end gate of his Chevy
Bumper years he sells enough
To take a trip out to Vegas
Buffet steaks every night
Lola Falana for his wife

Farm Bureau wasn’t for him
And he felt like caving a skull in
For giving earth cut with wagon tracks
To the tiny titans of cul-de-sacs

Between two split level homes
There’s a spot where the grass won’t grow
The Lennox man seems in prayer
genuflecting to fix central air
Jerry prayed their once too
Lied to God in his workboots
He held that poisoned land
And was Christ weighing nails with his hands
